By 1885, four British colonies had developed through trade: River Gambia, Sierra Leone, Gold Coast, and Southern Nigeria.  The British were very adamant against the African salve trades. Royal NigerCompany was charteredin Africa in 1886, to begin conquest of what was to become the Protectorate of Northern Nigeria. British intrest in Aden led to the proclaimation of a protectorate over the Somali coastlands on the opposite side of the Gulf of Aden, which was declared in 1885.
